Mt Taranaki

Ever notice what a strange shape the North Island has
compared to the South Island? The round lump on the
left corner is all because of a volcano, Taranaki,
that last erupted in 1755.

Taranaki has the dubious distinction of holding the
record for the most rainfall in a year in New Zealand.
It rained all three days I was there, the third day being
the least wet with some sunny breaks.

I actually hiked on an older volcanic mountain before
crossing over to Taranaki. Here are some of the lava
fingers reaching into the valley between the two mountains.

The real highlight was seeing old Fernwood friend Brad Eyre
and learning the finer points of Super 14 Rugby.
